And they're off

RICHFIELD - Horses and trailers filled the lot around Reynolds Arena in Richfield last weekend when Silver Creek Racing kicked off its 35th year of chariot racing. Tim Wilson, pictured, was just one of approximately 13 teams who blew through the gates for a practice run on what is known as 'play day' for the racers. Play day is a chance to just run your team against another team for a practice run - a local racer said. Points do not start accumulating until next week with the first official race. The races will be held in Richfield until mid-February and then the teams will compete at a state meet and then the top teams will go on to the World event - usually held in Ogden, Utah. There are no cash prizes for the winners of this yearly event - it's all about bragging rights - and for some that seems to be enough because most of the drivers and owners in the Silver Creek Chariot Racing Association have been active for more than 20 years and at least owner is celebrating his 50th year of chariot racing this year.

Beware of fraudulent checks

LINCOLN COUNTY - Two residents at the Lincoln County Care Center in Shoshone thought they were getting an early Christmas present when they received an unexpected cashier's check in the mail - but the checks turned out to be fraudulent and could have cost both a great deal of money in the end. The accompanying letter stated "Your name was selected as a winner in the U.K. Mega Million cross continental promotional sweepstakes. The account number stated above has been designated to you for an installment of $10,000.00 a month for two years. A total value of $240,000.00 congratulations."
The letter is supposedly sent from a law firm in Toronto, Canada which was retained by the U.K. National Lottery Commission.
"We have received this advance payment check from your winnings on your behalf from the NLC's accounting firm and have attached it to this letter. We will advise you when the balance has been released to us. We hope you finalize your payout within 10 business days from the first day we hear from you. Please call immediately to speak with us, activate your check and start your claim process." Lincoln County Prosecutor E. Scott Paul said that cases like these are impossible to prosecute because there is no way to find out where the check and letter originated from - one check had a bank address from Florida and the other was from Mississippi. In similar lottery scams, you would be instructed to deposit the check in your bank account and then could be held responsible for the funds once the check was determined to be phony or you could be asked to send money to receive the rest of your 'lottery' winnings. If you have received a letter similar to this or know of anyone else who has please notify the Lincoln County Prosecutor's office in Shoshone by calling 886-2454.
