Fair Board Minutes - June 23

Chairman Holly R. Cook called the meeting to order at 8:15 p.m. Members present were Robin Dansie, Keo Kelley, Marsha Hiatt and Jessica Robinson. Also present were Denise Helsley 4-H Leader, Rusty Parker Secretary and Ann Parker volunteer.
Keo moved and Robin seconded the approve minutes as corrected. Vote unanimous. Motion carries.
Marsha brought up that the Flag girls would like to ride in the parade and the grand entry at the rodeos. Robin moved and Holly seconded to ask the Flag girls to ride in the parade and the rodeos.
Ann asked about putting posts along each side of the fire land to keep cars from driving on the sprinklers. Different kinds of posts were discussed and who would pay for them. It was decided that 4X4 posts 10 feet long cut in half to make two posts would be the best way. Jessica moved to have the Fair Board pay for one half of the posts if the Commissioners would pay for the other half. Keo seconded. Vote unanimous. Motion carries. Ann will check on prices and amount charged.
Jessica asked if cars that park in the No Parking areas can be towed? A short discussion followed but no decision was made.
Rusty mentioned that the Published program needs to be updated as the printer has problems formatting with the old version. Robin moved and Jessica seconded to have Keo update the publisher program. Vote unanimous. Motion carries.
Marsha asked if the 4-H is charged for having the arena worked. Holly stated there is no charge for 4-H events but it would help if Harold knew the schedule so he can get it done without it having to be an emergency.
A discussion on the horse barn and the problem of too many horses for the stalls available, graffiti in the barn, panels for additional stalls, where to put the stalls, and parking by the horse barn resulted in several suggestions but no decisions. Gina Shotswell is the horse superintendent so some decisions will be left up to her.
Robin asked if the showers would be open after the rodeo. Marsha stated that the Board would have keys to the building during the fair so it was decided to leave access to the bathrooms open 24 hours a day for the duration of the fair.
Rusty said that he had been asked about renting the Merchant's Building on August 29. Considerable discussion followed on the pros and cons of renting the Merchant's building. Holly gave Rusty the current one page form being used for the Merchant's Building and the rodeo grounds and asked him to re-write it with the suggestions discussed. She also gave him the multi-page contract for the Community Building to read over. It was decided that the Board should not rent the Merchant's building if the Community Building was available and if alcohol is served security will be required.
Rusty asked about finding an advertiser to replace Pepsi as they have declined to sponsor a chute gate this year. Jessica will make flyers to put up and Rusty will put ads in the Toponis Times and the Camas Courier.
Denise asked if dumpsters had been ordered for the fair. They haven't. She would like to have them by the 16th or 17th.
Jessica moved to donate $150.00 to Kimberly Broner to help defray her expenses running for Miss Teen Idaho. Keo seconded. Vote unanimous. Motion carries.
Denise asked Rusty to send letters to those that have put in an application for trailer parking but without money attached. They will not be added to the list until the fee is paid.
Jessica asked about prizes for the Queens. Holly will help her with that.

Search continues for Shoshone girl

SHOSHONE - The search resumed early Friday morning for a Shoshone girl who presumably drown in the Little Wood River. The young girl accidentally slipped into the river near the Shoshone park on Thursday afternoon. Search and rescue officials, from more than eight agencies, combed the river until after 9 p.m. but were unable to locate her. Also on site helping in the rescue effort was a Air St. Luke's helicopter. Due to the current weather conditions the Little Wood River is muddy and very swift in that area.

The body of the drowning victim was found earlier today. It was discovered near where she first entered the river.

Shoshone business opens farmer's market

Grass fed lamb, herbs and baked good currently available
SHOSHONE -- It all started at a good ol’ fashioned quilting bee.
A group of friends started brainstorming about selling the handmade items on which they were working. What would happen if they supported each other by paying a neighbor to make a baby quilt or maybe taught each other how to make a purse? What if we traded freshly grown produce from the garden or baked goods? How could they make it work – and maybe support other neighbors in the process?
Front Porch Marketplace answered the question.
The Marketplace, located at Fresh Country Hair in North Shoshone, celebrated its grand opening July 8. The market featured locally grown produce, home baked goods and hand crafted gift items.
“Our goal is to empower our friends and neighbors to find sustainable avenues of revenue and provide at outlet for the amazing talent we have in our area,” said Salli Hubbs, owner of Fresh Country Hair and the Front Porch Marketplace.
Hubbs said the marketplace will be open Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 9 to 5. While much of the local produce is still in the garden, the stores features herbs, lettuce, locally grown lamb and sheep’s milk cheese as well as homemade quilts, wooden stools, clothing, and freshly baked breads and desserts. All produced and grown by the original group of quilters along with a few more neighbors and friends.
On Wednesdays, neighbors often gather in another section of Hubbs store called Back Porch Fabrics. Some weeks feature sewing and quilting classes while other s offer the opportunity to work on crafting and sewing projects while visiting with friends and neighbors.
“It’s really like a traditional sewing bee,” Hubbs said. “We help each other with projects, certainly. But more importantly, we’ve become good friends and met people we wouldn’t have known otherwise.”
It was on a recent Wednesday when the group decided they wanted an outlet for garden extras and sewn projects without a home.
“At first, we thought about joining a local farmers market,” said Tammy Corrigan. “But then, we thought, ‘Why stop there?’ We have products we sell year round, more than one day a week.”
The store is a little off the beaten path, but Hubbs thinks shoppers will find the unique store worth the effort.
“You’ll find things in our little store you won’t find anywhere else. Plus, you’ll find gifts, sewing notions and fabrics you’d have to drive a lot farther to buy. Watch for signs or just call for directions,” Hubbs said.
To get to Fresh Country Hair, Back Porch Fabrics, and the new Front Porch Marketplace from Highway 75, turn west on 420 North (at Johnny’s Country Store) then north on 150 West. It’s a half mile north on the left. Call 886-2022 or 316-1003 for directions or go to http://www.freshcountryhair.com.
